Sanit(y)ation: An aim to clean the Water Drainage in North Manhattan Res., Brgy. Santor

Final Report

Playing with words is one of my interests. That's why I thought of Sanit(y)ation as the title of my story. I placed (y) between 't' and 'a' at sanitation because even though my respondents in our subdivision have trouble with the foul odor coming from the water drainages, their sanity is still intact, meaning they keep up with it.

Sanitation promotes hygiene and prevention of disease by maintaining sanitary conditions (as by removing sewage and trash) —often used as sanitation truck sanitation workers (Merriam-Webster). Maintaining sanitation ensures that the garbage is disposed of properly to avoid foul odor.

Behind North Manhattan Res., Brgy. Santor (a subdivision) has water drainages. And you'll find that in this block are where the foul odors were coming from.

Our subdivision is near the industrial where factories settled; as I mentioned in my proposal, some factories throw their garbage waste, resulting in water drainage.

Here are some pictures that I've gathered to close up water drainages that sometimes have foul odors.

These are the three questions that I asked my respondents, including the barangay official.

  1. What does sanitation mean for you?

  2. What's your opinion on the smell coming from the water drainage?

  3. What suggestion/solution will you give to get rid of the smell?

Cleanliness is the standard answer from my respondents on the first question. Indeed, when a person thinks of sanitation, cleanliness always comes to mind. Regarding their opinion, one of the respondents mentioned that it's bothering them, and they want it gone because kids live nearby, and it may affect their health. And some pointed out there is mixed garbage in the drainage. Moreover, their suggestion is to discipline oneself because we're the first ones to take action and properly dispose of waste.

The barangay official, a councilor, to be specific, gave me a different response since he was adding practical and coherent information about the questions I asked him.

"Regarding do'n sa may napapansin kayong amoy, dahil ang Santor ay mayro'ng industrial zone -- FBIC. Minsan binisita namin 'yon as a part of sanitation visitation, mayro'n kaming nakitang paglabag. So, mayro'ng ibang company, factory, wala silang water treatment facilities so binilin namin 'yan, nagrequire kami. Mayroon namang sumunod. So far yung amoy na nanggagaling sa kanila, lumulusot 'yan along sa Usapang Baliwag." The councilor of Brgy. Santor said.

I defined Usapang Baliwag in my second blog. It is the water and waste passageway and the drainage of McArthur Highway. But then the counselor mentioned that it was also an outfall. "Yearly, sa pakikipagtulungan ng FBIC administration, nililinis namin 'yan." However, the counsilor indicated that the outfall doesn't cover Brgy. Santor. "Kung minsan, hindi nalilinis kaya nagbabara," he added.

The barangay officials created a proposal to manufacture a riprap to sanitize the waste for the continuous water flow. They only need the coordination of every factory to have water waste treatment facilities. They hope that the Malolos Municipality will approve this proposal.

In the case of North Manhattan Residences and its water drainage, the barangay officials would try to visit, inspect, and request factory owners to do a background check if they have water waste treatment facilities. If none, they must quickly take action. Still, if the factory decides to disregard not having water waste treatment facilities, the barangay officials will address the problem to the City Health office to be informed.

"Yung solution is patuloy na maging malinis ang ating drainage. Tapos hikayatin na magtayo sila [referring to the factories] ng water waste treatment facilities."

My reflection:

Sanitation is a must. A clean environment means safety for the community. As to North Manhattan Residence, the residents have their own point of view regarding the foul odor that's coming from the water drainage. It was a fun experience since they have mostly the same answers on the definition of sanitation and even their opinions on the water drainage. Also, when I conducted the interview with the barangay councilor, the barangay officials are deeply concerned for their people and made immediate responses to avoid expanding the situation so that it wouldn't affect everyone's health.
