A short introduction
To be honest, when our professor said that we are going to pursue a news story about problems in the community, the first thing that comes to my mind is the waste management issue here in our barangay. The improper waste segregation and collection that can cause other problems in terms of health and environment will be an important story to tackle especially if you are experiencing it directly. Moreover, the result of the survey-interview conducted both to ordinary citizens and barangay officials gives me strong proof that it is a bigger concern by many people living here, not only by my family.
The essence
There are many reasons why this issue about waste management particularly the waste segregation and collection are important to discuss. Listed below are some of it:
In order to create a solution for the problem, we need to determine where it all started.
It is a real community concern that can take many lives if not give proper attention.
By dealing with this problem, we can identify the connection of it with other issue in the community and we can address both of these at a time, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone.
We need to see how the community works as a whole in dealing with this kind of problem.
It is crucial in a sense that we are giving ordinary people an opportunity to hear their sides towards the issue and make these voices reach the higher ones.
The game plan
Every action has a plan to begin with, it serves as a guide to an individual all throughout the process until he accomplished the mission. That’s why I prepared a simple plan on how to acquire all the things that I need for this news report.
So, let’s start on the topic itself, as we can see on the title, the issue that I choose is all about Waste management but I will give an emphasis on its two components: the waste segregation and waste collection, because I think these two things are where our community is lacking. I will be going to find out what are the stories behind this dilemma.
When it comes to respondents, I will choose those people who are directly connected to the issue such as ordinary people who are experiencing it firsthand, the garbage collectors, and the barangay officials in our community. I will ask them politely either through messenger chat or face-to-face if they want to participate in the interview, if they said no, I’ll respect their decision and thank them for their time.
For gathering information, an interview type composed of open-ended questions I think is the best way to get a wide variety of information. It will give my respondents freedom to say everything on their mind in a comfortable manner. I will let them use the interview session as a platform to express themselves towards the topic. This interview can be done through messenger application (either chat or voice message) or face-to-face, based on what my respondents prefer.
After collecting information, organizing it is the next thing to do and that can be done by the use of a data table. This type of displaying information is very simple and can easily be understood by the audience. It organizes in a way that I can develop an interpretation based on the data given.
Lastly, all of the important data that I acquired about the topic needs to be written using simple words to make it easy to absorb by the readers. The sentiments given by the respondents need to be supported by factual information to make the report credible. Of course, this news report that I will create is not just a pure text, combining different multimedia elements like pictures, audios, videos, charts, tables, and graphics will make it both informative and entertaining.
