Address to Progress: A Survey about the Issues in Barangay Pio Cruzcosa, Calumpit, Bulacan

The community that I chose is Barangay Pio Cruzcosa, Calumpit, Bulacan which is where I am currently living. I chose our barangay due to the fact that I am also aware from what are the current issues we are actually facing. Also, I want to know what are the thoughts of my chosen fellow barangay citizens in terms of what are the things our barangay needs to improve and address immediately. In conducting a survey, I have noticed that there are so many problems that our barangay is currently facing. Some of the problems are I am aware that it exists in our community and some of it are I am not that knowledgeable. I have made a survey in which I invited 10 people to answer some of the questions and I made a graph to see some of the results:

Figure 1. Age and Gender of the Respondents

The graph above shows that there are a total of 10 chosen respondents ages 19-49 years old, four males, and six females. The age and gender also affect how they answered the survey and all their answers are significant to analyze the results.

Figure 2. Profession/Work of the Respondents

Among the 10 respondents, five of them are already working in different professions, two of them are still studying, and three of them are not working.

Figure 3. Current Issues that the Respondents have noticed

The graph above illustrates the list of existing problems in our barangay. In the survey form, I asked them to answer what are the current issues our barangay is encountering. 70% or 7 people answered that poor government support is the current issue that we are facing, it was followed by the collection of the waste problem with 50%, lack of government health support with 40%, teenage pregnancy with 30%, Noise pollution and abuse of the barangay officials with 20%, and illegal drugs problem and flood with 10%.

Figure 4. Community Problem of Barangay Pio Cruzcosa that the Respondents Want to be Addressed Immediately

In the pie graph above, the result indicates that the Collection of Wastes should be addressed first according to the 30% of respondents. It became a top answer in the survey form. It was followed by Flood and Lack of Government Support in terms of Health and Other Projects which both got a 20% out of 10 respondents, and the other three problems that should be addressed according to the citizens are Crime, Teenage Pregnancy, and Educational Assistance with the same results of 10% of all the respondents.

Conclusion:

I analyzed the results of the survey with the help of the google forms I made. Furthermore, I have given the respondents the freedom to choose only one problem that is needed to be addressed first and they all become cooperative since they answered depending on what our community is really experiencing. As I have noticed, the number one problem in our barangay is the flooding and collecting of wastes in every household. Since there is a water irrigation site located in our barangay, flooding is one of the most challenging problems especially if there are typhoons. Also, since the collection of wastes is not well implemented in our barangay, some people are throwing their garbage in the irrigation site which is also one of the main reasons for flooding. As far as what I am also experiencing, the interrelated problems about garbage collection and flood are really the main problem that should be addressed in our community. Their location also influences answering the survey because 5 out of 10 respondents that I asked are living near the water irrigation site. The government or the barangay officials should make a plan immediately to eliminate this kind of problem since it does not just affect the community but also our environment and nature. Also, there are some problems that the respondents also want to address like teenage pregnancy. Based on my observation, here in our community, there are really a lot of teenagers who are not knowledgeable on how to use/what are contraceptions and are not aware of family planning. I have seen in our place that starting 16 years of age, they already have a child even if they are still living with their parents and do not have a decent job to sustain the lives of their own family. One of the reasons is that our community is not focusing on that kind of problem and there are no seminars or activities about teenage pregnancy awareness and prevention. Moreover, crime became also an answer in my survey form because there are minimal crime happenings in our barangay and I think it is due to alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs. Also, even if our barangay has CCTVs, it is not functioning already which causes the citizens to be frightened walking especially at night. Lastly, the government lack of support for educational and health assistance in our barangay. The budget allocation for our barangay is not enough to support the education and health programs in our barangay. Also, even if there is a health facility, there are no doctors in it and it is just a small room located in barangay hall which is why it can't be used by many citizens. There are some free medicines but it is still not enough for all the people in our barangay. In terms of educational support, there are no scholars and programs for students given by our barangay which is very alarming since, in other barangays, there is educational assistance given to students as additional financial support, especially during this pandemic.

In a nutshell, there are so many existing issues in our place and the officials should allocate a lot of effort to make our barangay better. Budget transparency of the officials is also important for the people to know and be informed where are all the budgets of the barangay distributed. Since I got a variety of answers in just 10 respondents, it just simply means that there are so many problems in Barangay Pio Cruzcosa that need to be addressed as early as possible.
